GE HealthCare Wants Nuclear Medicine Out of Hospitals

GE HealthCare has outlined a strategy to move nuclear medicine beyond the confines of traditional hospital settings, unveiling the plan at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging's annual meeting. Company officials cited global nuclear medicine market projections showing growth from roughly $7.8 billion in 2024 to more than $30.7 billion by 2034.

That trajectory, the company said, is forcing health systems to reconsider how and where these therapies reach patients. Jean-Luc Procaccini, president and chief executive of Molecular Imaging and Computed Tomography at GE HealthCare, said nuclear medicine is shifting from early innovation toward large scale clinical implementation. Systems need technologies and workflows that expand access, improve efficiency and support more confident clinical decisions, he said, as theranostics adoption grows.

The company is concentrating on three clinical areas, each facing its own scaling hurdles: cardiology, neurology and oncology. In cardiology, GE HealthCare's Flyrcado PET imaging agent is being paired with a ready to use, unit dose model built for routine clinical workflows. Mobile imaging models are extending cardiac PET access to sites that would not otherwise have it.

In oncology, the company's StarGuide SPECT CT platform, Intelligent Radiation Therapy tools and MIM software suite are positioned to standardize whole body tumor burden assessment and treatment planning. Together, these feed what GE HealthCare calls its Adaptive Theranostics vision, a connected, data driven approach linking molecular imaging and multidisciplinary workflows across treatment cycles.

Munir Ghesani, chief medical officer at United Theranostics and system chief of nuclear medicine at Mount Sinai Health System, said the field is moving beyond simply detecting disease toward understanding its underlying biology and behavior. Eric Ruedinger, vice president and general manager of pharmaceutical diagnostics at GE HealthCare, added that success will depend on building the ecosystem around individual products rather than treating them as standalone tools.

Such framing spans tracer development, manufacturing, workflow integration and access expansion, and it signals where large imaging and diagnostics companies expect the next phase of competitive differentiation to occur. The results could shape how theranostics scale across health systems in the years ahead.
